Perivascular wall tumour in a Friesian Horse

This case report describes a perivascular wall tumour in a 24-year-old Frisian gelding who was presented with rapidly developing swelling of the prepuce. At the time of initial presentation, the prepuce was moderately swollen and a slight swelling stretched between the hind legs to the anus, where adspection and palpation revealed a mass of approx. 5 cm diameter at the right aspect of the anus. The mass was ultrasonographically examined transcutaneously and transrectally, with the tissue appearing inhomogeneous with lacunae-like cavities. Fine needle aspiration was able to exclude an abscess and a seroma. The rectal examination revealed multiple soft, elastic masses in the pelvic area and cranial to the pelvis that did not restrict the rectum. Hematology and biochemistry were within normal ranges. The mass to the right of the anus was biopsied and examined histologically and immunohistochemically. A perivascular wall tumor was diagnosed. Due to the location and spread of the tumor, excision was no longer possible. The patient was therefore euthanized a few weeks later due to urinary problems.
