An unilateral adrenal phaeochromocytoma in a 27 years old horse is described. The diagnosis is based on immunohistochemical demonstration of synaptophysin within the tumor cells and by electronmicroscopic findings. The tumor cells contain large quantities of intracytoplasmic innersecretory granules which are of the predominantly norepinephrin secreting type. Vascular lesions in brain, heart and lung as well as focal elastosis of the endocardium in the left atrium suggest temporary high blood pressure during life. The sudden death is thought to be caused by an acute crisis of blood pressure due to excessive secretion of catecholamines by the phaeochromocytoma.
